10 December - 12 December 2009
New Developments showcases eight one act plays that are specifically about the ever-evolving culture of the UAE - it is the first production of its kind in this country. Each of the one-act plays is a finalist in the national playwriting competition ‘Act Up’ launched by the Dubai Drama Group in the summer of 2009. The aim of the competition is to encourage talented amateur writers to celebrate and explore the complex and varying nature of life and culture in the UAE. The eight pieces being produced explore a wide range of issues and lifestyles in the country, from American ex-pats to passionate young Emirati’s, busy Lebanese executives, British journalists and ladies who lunch. Crucially, the evening’s entertainment will be thought-provoking as well as entertaining. Whilst there is much comedy, the evening also explores some of the economic challenges that people from every walk of life in the UAE may have faced during the recession - from the richest businessmen right down to those in service industries and construction workers.
