“Occupy” provides the opportunity for artists to take over thejamjar’s front window for a few months during the year on a rotating basis. The prime location at Alserkal Avenue offers the artist exposure at one of the most important art hubs in the world. Every few months thejamjar puts out a callout or invite an artist to ‘occupy’ the window with their art.
The first edition featured photographer, Sara Lando, in collaboration with Gulf Photo Plus Photo Week. The second edition of “Occupy”’ will begin in conjunction with Art Week at Alserkal Avenue.
/ Artist Statement
My work aims to explore identity, the boundaries between what’s real and what’s imagined and the way memory changes shapes over time. I am interested in moments when the traditional relationship between the self and the world around it comes undone and is replaced by a new definition of who we are, or might be. The techniques utilised in my work are derived from playful curiosity and direct interaction with the object rather than a virtual modification of the image. I’m fascinated by the fragmentation and degradation of the image and the concept of creating through physical destruction.
